Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

Heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia) is characterized by abnormally heavy or protracted bleeding when menstruating.

There are a number of possible causes of heavy menstrual bleeding. These include a hormone imbalance, dysfunctional ovaries, polyps, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), benign tumors of the uterus, pregnancy complications. It may also be the side effect of an intrauterine device or certain medication, such as hormonal drug and certain anti-inflammatories and anticoagulants.

Symptoms of heavy menstrual bleeding include bleeding for longer than a week, using one or more sanitary pads or tampons hourly for several hours, needing to change sanitary protection during the night, bleeding after menopause, passing large clots, and spotting between period. Menorrhagia may also result in symptoms associated with anemia.

Treatment usually focuses on addressing the underlying cause of the condition. Synthetic antifibrinolytics may also be prescribed to treat heavy menstrual bleeding.
