Hives

Hives

Hives, also known as urticaria, is a common skin condition characterized by the formation of itchy blotches and welts appearing on the skin. They may appear anywhere on the body and vary in size.

Hives are often a reaction to a particular food, for example, peanuts, shellfish or dairy, medication or another substance, but may also be a sign of underlying medical conditions, such as lupus, HIV, or certain cancers.

Welts associated with hives are typically red, itchy, and either oval or worm-shaped. They tend to vanish within 24 hours, although chronic hives may last for months or years. Risk factors include having had the condition before, allergies, genetics, and disorders associated with hives, such as thyroid disease.

Treatment of hives usually involves taking medication. Common drug classes used to the treat the condition are various antihistamines, including first generation (sedating) antihistamines, second generation (non-sedating) antihistamines, and anxiolytics, non-benzodiazepines.
