Hypotension

Hypotension

Hypotension refers to abnormally low blood pressure, which results in the heart and other parts of the body not receiving sufficient blood. Risk factors include age, certain medication, and certain diseases.

Symptoms of hypotension include dizziness or feeling lightheaded, blurred vision, fatigue, lack of concentration, nausea, and fainting. In extreme cases, it may lead to confusion, clammy skin, rapid breathing, and a weak pulse. Should these symptoms appear it is important to seek medical attention.

Hypotension has a variety of possible causes, including pregnancy, dehydration, blood loss, and a lack of dietary nutrients. Underlying medical conditions may also be the cause of hypotension, such as heart problems, endocrine problems related to disorders of the thyroid, severe infection, and anaphylaxis (serious allergic reactions). Hypotension may also be a side effect of medication, for example, certain diuretics, alpha blockers, antidepressants, and erectile dysfunction drugs.

Treatment of hypotension depends on the health of the patient and the severity of the condition but usually involves medication. Vasopressors may be prescribed as a treatment for hypotension.
