Jock itch is a fungal infection affecting the skin on the buttocks, inner thighs, and groin. It is so named because it is particularly common in athletes and people who sweat a lot.
Risk factors for jock itch include being male and a young adult or teen, being overweight, sweating heavily, diabetes, and a weak immune system. Effective steps to prevent jock itch are drying thoroughly, particularly after exercising; wearing clean clothes; avoiding tight-fitting clothes; not sharing clothing or towels, and ensuring any athletes foot outbreaks are treated promptly.
Symptoms of jock itch are a red patch of skin spreading out from the groin to the upper thigh, often bordered with small raised blisters. and scaly skin. Skin often becomes scaly and the rash may itch or burn.
Jock itch is often treated with over-the-counter medication, such as antifungal lotions, powders, ointments or sprays. If this fails, prescription antifungals may prove more effective. Drug classes commonly used to treat jock itch are combinations of corticosteroids with antifungals, topical dermatological antifungals, other systemic antifungals, and combinations of corticosteroids with antibacterials.
