Ringworm

Ringworm

Ringworm, also called tinea corporis, is a fungal skin infection of the body closely related to athlete's foot and jock itch. It is spread via direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person or animal. Ringworm is so-called because of its characteristic red circular rash with clearer skin in the middle.

Other symptoms are itching, a flat, scaly area of skin, and the formation of small raised red spots. Risk factors that increase the likelihood of a ringworm infection are living in a warm climate, close contact or sharing clothes and bedding with an infected person, wearing tight clothing, and having a weakened immune system.

Ringworm is usually successfully treated with antifungal medication, often with over-the-counter drugs. Drug classes commonly used to treat ringworm are topical dermatological antifungals, topical scalp antifungals, combinations of corticosteroids with antifungals, and combinations of corticosteroids with antibacterials.
