Centrally acting muscle relaxants are used to treat a number of musculoskeletal conditions. They block pain signals, lessen tension in the muscles and reduce pain and stiffness. Muscle relaxants are often prescribed to treat patients with spasticity caused by cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis and stroke. They may also be used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms and tension headaches. Commonly prescribed muscle relaxants include Amrix (cyclobenzaprine), Robaxin (methocarbamol) and Soma (carisoprodol).
