Metal levels

Plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace are divided into four “metal levels”; Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum (certain people are also eligible for Catastrophic health insurance plans). Premiums vary and will in part depend on your annual income, so make sure you check whether you qualify for reduced monthly premiums.

Bronze plans have the lowest monthly premiums but have high deductibles and you will incur the highest costs if you do require care. At the other end of the scale are Platinum plans, which have the highest monthly premiums, but very low deductibles and low costs when you require care.

Silver plans are far more popular than the other options. Out of 12 million enrollees in 2021, 6.5 million signed up for Silver plans and 4.25 million signed up for Bronze plans, according to figures from the Kaiser Family Foundation.
