Flu Vaccination

Flu Vaccination

The flu is a common respiratory infection caused by the influenza virus. It is a contagious condition easily spread person-to-person via droplets in the sneezes or coughs of those who are already infected. Each year, new flu vaccinations are produced to combat the common strains. Figures from the CDC show around half the population of the United States are immunized each year.

For certain patients, the flu is a serious condition and a flu vaccination is particularly advisable, notably those over the age of 65, pregnant women, and young children. Patients with certain medical conditions are also more at risk, including those with asthma, cancer, COPD, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, kidney or liver disease, and cystic fibrosis.

Symptoms of the flu may be similar to the common cold, but unlike a cold, they often come on suddenly. They include aches and pain in the joints and muscles; pain and tiredness around the eyes; headaches; a dry cough; a sore throat and runny nose; flushed skin; and weakness or fatigue.

Flu vaccinations immunize patients against the influenza virus and are particularly advisable ahead of the flu season. A range of other medication is available to treat the symptoms of the flu.
