Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the virus that causes AIDS. It attacks the body's immune system, making it harder to fight off other infections and diseases and is contracted through contact with infected bodily fluids.
The HIV virus attacks the body's white blood cells and progresses into AIDS when this white blood cell count falls below a certain threshold or when an AIDS-defining condition develops. These include lymphoma, wasting syndrome and tuberculosis, among others.
There is no known cure for HIV, but the condition can be treated and managed with medication. Drug classes commonly used to treat the condition include combination HIV antivirals, integrate strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs), protease inhibitors, integrate strand transfer inhibitors (INSTIs) and nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTISs).
