Peptic ulcers occur when acid in the digestive tract burns the inner surface of the stomach or small intestine, resulting in an open sore. There are a number of different kinds of peptic ulcer, including gastric ulcers, which occur in the stomach, and duodenal ulcers, which appear in the upper section of the small intestine.
Peptic ulcers may be caused by a bacterium in the gut, overuse of certain pain-relieving medication, particularly NSAIDs and some SSRIs. Other factors that may increase the likelihood of a peptic ulcer developing are smoking, drinking alcohol, stress, and spicy food.
Common symptoms of a peptic ulcer are feeling full, bloating, gas, burning stomach pain, intolerance of fatty foods, heartburn, and nausea. In severe cases, signs of a peptic ulcer may include vomiting or vomiting blood, blood in stools, unexplained weight loss, breathing difficulties, unexplained weight loss, and appetite changes.
Treatment of peptic ulcers generally involves taking medication to encourage healing, alleviate symptoms, and treat the cause of the condition. If the cause is bacteria, antibiotics may be prescribed. Drug classes commonly used to treat peptic ulcers are belladonna and derivatives and anticholinergics/antispasmodics for functional bowel disorders.
