Cost sharing reduction (CSR)
A cost sharing reduction (CSR), also known as “extra savings” in the Health Insurance Marketplace, is a subsidy introduced by the Affordable Care Act. It reduces the amount you are required to pay for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments, but is only available on Silver health plans.
Generally, you are eligible for CSR if you are eligible for advance premium tax credits and your household income is between 100 percent and 250 percent of the federal poverty level. In 2020, around half of all Americans enrolled in health plans received CSRs, according to figures from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).
