Eye Infection

Eye infection covers a number of different conditions, but are characterized by an infection of the eye by bacteria, fungi or viruses. One of the most common forms of eye infection is pinkeye, also known as conjunctivitis.

Symptoms of an eye infection include inflammation, redness, itchiness, discharge, and excessive tear production in one or both eyes. An infection may also cause changes in vision and pain. Infections may affect different parts of the eye or eyes, including the eyelids and cornea.

Treatment of an eye infection depends on the cause of the infection, but medication is usually required. Drug classes commonly prescribed to treat eye infection include ophthalmological corticosteroids, ophthalmological anti-infectives, ophthalmological corticosteroid and anti-infective combinations, fluoroquinolone antibiotics, tetracycline antibiotics, and polymyxin antibiotics.
