Eye Inflammation

Eye inflammation refers to swelling and inflammation of the eyelids or other parts of the eye. Inflammation of the middle part of the eye (uvea) is known as uveitis. Other examples of eye inflammation include blepharitis, which is crusting and reddening of the eyelid, and keratitis, the term for inflammation of the cornea.

Common causes of eye inflammation include bacterial infection, injury, and other medical conditions, such as autoimmune diseases. Other conditions that increase the risk of eye inflammation include psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, AIDS, multiple sclerosis, and herpes zoster infections.

Treatment of eye inflammation will depend on the causes, but commonly used drug classes include ophthalmological non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, ophthalmological corticosteroids, systemic corticosteroids, plain, topical anti-inflammatory, and ophthalmological corticosteroid and anti-infective combinations.
